WHAT IS DEBIAN-HAM ------------------ Debian-Ham is a 2 floppy linux distribution with tlf and cwdaemon installed. This way you can get a feel of linux and tlf, a trlog-like clone which can be used for contesting. Included is a basic shell, a tiny editor and network support. Debian-Ham should be able to run on low-end machines, my test machine is a 386SX20 without co-processor and 8 MB of RAM. INSTALLING THE FLOPPY IMAGES ---------------------------- Debian-Ham floppy disk images can be written to a floppy with dd if you use linux: 'dd if=filename.img of=/dev/fd0'. On windows, use rawrite. On windows NT or windows 2000, use ntrawrite, see http://ntrawrite.sourceforge.net. There is also a rawrite for windows XP, you need to search for it. A lilo boot and minix root disk is available. You need both. USING DEBIAN_HAM ---------------- Insert the boot floppy in your floppy drive and reset your PC (note: enable booting from floppy disc in the bios, if it won't work). After a while, the startup script will ask for the second (root) floppy. At the login prompt, login as root (no password). Support is included for 4 different network cards: - ne1000/2000 (ISA) - 3c509/579 (ISA) You must setup the network by hand. If it works, add your ifconfig and route commands to /etc/init.d/rcS, so they will be loaded the next time. Examples are included in rcS. You can use the network to connect to a dxcluster with telnet. CW KEYER -------- Cwdaemon provides keyer support (type 'cwdaemon -h' for help). A transistor switch can be hooked up to your parallel or serial port to interface with your transceiver. The parallel port is the default keyer port. Here is the circuitry: ----o CW out to TRX | | | C 1k B | / SELECT IN o----/\/\/\-------|/ BC547, 2N2222, etc. (pin 17) |\ | \| E | STROBE o-------------------- (pin 1) GROUND o-------------------------o GROUND (pin 18) For the serial port you can use the next circuit (DB9 connector): +---------+--------o CW out to TRX / | DTR 4k7 B |/ C | o------|===|-----+------+-----------| BC547,|2N2222, etc. (pin 4) | | |\ E | --- --- \ --- 1n4148 / \ | | 4k7 + / \ 1n4148 --- | | | --- | --- | | GROUND | | | | o----------------+------+--------------+---------+--------o GROUND (pin 5) CONTESTING ---------- You can edit logcfg.dat (in the /root directory) before the contest with 'edit logcfg.dat'. When finished, type 'tlf'. You have about 390k free on the root floppy to run a contest. SUPPORT ------- There is a web-site for Debian-Ham at http://debianham.sunsite.dk. A mailing list is available for support and development, you can join by sending a mail to debianham-devel-request@sunsite.dk. There is also a mailing list for tlf support at: http://mail.nongnu.org/mailman/listinfo/tlf-devel. Have Fun! Joop, PA4TU
